Hair Graft Density
How many garft do you need? If there is one major complaint in hair transplantation, it is the lack of density we are able to achieve over the bald areas. To understand the density issue , one needs to realize that at birth they had approximately 100,000 follicles covering the scalp. There were 40,000 follicles over the donor region (sides and back of the head) and 60,000 follicles over the frontal region, mid-scalp, and crown..
Remember, hair loss is not visible to you or others until you lost 50% of the hair follicles in that area. This means that by the time you recognize that you are losing your hair, you have lost half of the original hair. Fortunately, we don’t need 100% of the birth hair to achieve a cosmetically acceptable result, but obviously the more extensive the loss the less surface coverage and density we are able to attain. Several factors play a role in determining how much density we can accomplish.
